Additionally, small auxiliary ports are often drilled or machined into the upper surface of the brake and are designed to control muzzle jump.Įngineering the side ports and any auxiliary ports can be a complex task. Side vents direct most of the exploding propellant gases to each side, rather than equally all the way around. Directional Muzzle Brakesĭirectional brakes are typically more complex than radial brakes. Many modern directional brakes are indexable via a locking collar, which makes aligning them correctly easier and takes less time. The effect of directional brakes is much more manipulatable, as we’ll discuss shortly. They’re also a pain to install because they have to torque up correctly oriented, and that takes extra gunsmithing time. Directional brakes employ side ports and sometimes small top-side ports to minimize recoil and muzzle jump. And they can vent perpendicular or slightly forward or rearward. About all the designer can do is vary the size and number of the holes and the slant at which they come through the brake. It is not pleasant.Īnother weakness of radial-type muzzle brakes is the lack of control that engineers can apply. Sometimes it does so with enough force to settle around the face of the shooter and leave dust and particulates settling in the front of the scope and even in the action. Super-heated gas jets out in all directions from the brake and can cause the primary complaint about radial brakes: if the shooter is lying on a dusty or sandy surface-or really anything with loose detritus-the gases venting out from the portion of the brake near the ground kick up an unholy cloud of dust. These holes all vent burning propellant gases simultaneously as the bullet exits the muzzle. Simple but effective, radial muzzle brakes are round, usually the same or similar diameter as the barrel at the muzzle, and have several rows of round holes drilled all the way around the circumference of the brake. It effectively takes the edge off without causing excessive blast. The modest Quiet Slimbrake II (at left) is one of the author’s favorite hunting brakes. However, they kick up a big cloud of dust when shooting prone and are not tunable to compensate for muzzle jump. Radial brakes are easy to install and so are more common. We’ll start chronologically, with radial brakes. Let’s dive into the differences between the two types. The reason is they’re much easier to install. While both types have been around for close to a century, radial brakes were the most common until rather recently. When comparing radial and directional muzzle brakes, each one creates a somewhat different rifle response during recoil and, more importantly, a significantly different experience to the shooter.

The project was never approved, and the lands were sold to private individuals who commercialized and capitalized on the springs. government deliberated on whether or not to build a convalenscent hospital at the thermal mineral springs. In the 1860s the United States Army considered developing the hot springs for their healing properties, and documented the efficacy of the mineral water. Public and private bathhouses were built for use by gold miners and families, as well as injured Civil War soldiers. After white settlers arrived, much of the area surrounding the major spring (now known as The Mother Spring) was landfilled and walkways were constructed between springs and vapor vents. He noted that the springs were considered a sacred site and a "place of peace" that was used by various tribes. In 1859, the springs were recorded by Captain John Macomb during his exploration expedition of the San Juan area. The springs are known to the Ute people as Pah gosah which means either "healing water" or "water ( pah) that has a bad smell ( gosah)", referring to the pungent odor of hydrogen sulphide gas produced by the interaction of sulphur with anaerobic bacteria in the mineral water. In the cosmology of the Navajo people, Pagosa Springs is near the place where the People (Diné) emerged from their Fourth World underground to the present world known as the Fifth World, according to The Dîné: Origin Myths of the Navaho Indians. The hot springs were used by these indigenous people for centuries and it has been written that they were considered "sacred ground". The springs were later used by the modern Pueblo people, Ute, Navajo and Apache. Shards of pottery made by the Ancestral Puebloans were found at the springs in the 1950s when a well excavation blast caused the spring water to eject underground material. Later, the Ancestral Puebloan people used the springs, having settled at the San Juan River approximately 1,000 years ago. Before the arrival of Hispanic and Anglo settlers, the springs were used by the Folsom culture, a 9,000-year-old Folsom point was found at the site of a shelter foundation nearby. Jim Ryan, D-Franklin, who chairs the House Transportation Committee, said he's sensitive to those concerns. "Through no fault of my own I had to pay the DMV this fee, the DMV says it is (E-ZPass') fault, (E-ZPass) says it's the NHDOT's fault and they say (it's) the DMV's fault," the reader wrote. He said he fought the violation in court, and even though it was ruled the system made an error he had to pay $175 to restore his license. Such a "check system" - set up to catch a "problem before its gets to suspension level" - wasn't in place before, Mulcahey-Hampson said.Ī second improvement is having the Division of Motor Vehicles inform ACS when the state agency receives confirmation that drivers have cleared up billing issues, she said.īefore, "it was just assumed they got it," opening the door to trouble and headaches if, for example, there's a computer glitch that blocked DMV from receiving ACS' information, Mulcahey-Hampson said.Īn agreement was also reached limiting the number of cases ACS could send the state at once, in hopes of keeping the workload manageable, Mulcahey-Hampson said.Ī Lee resident emailed Foster's recently to say last Easter he was stopped by police for an E-ZPass violation that - unbeknownst to him - led to his license being suspended. These days, DOT now reviews each instance where the state's E-ZPass vendor and administrator, N.J.-based Affiliated Computer Services, requests driving privileges be suspended for alleged violators. Mulcahey-Hampson said she's aware of at least eight cases where drivers were arrested despite being up to date with their bills. She had known the system had the wrong license plate number for her, and she tried to fix it but to no avail, according to news reports. A Bedford real estate agent with a spotless driving record was arrested for the same reason after police discovered an unpaid E-ZPass toll. In one case, a Wolfeboro teacher paid the toll, but it didn't get processed, his license was suspended and he was arrested. There have been several cases this year where drivers were arrested for having suspended licenses due to human errors or glitches in the E-ZPass system - and the state thought it was fair to begin adhering to the law now, Mulcahey-Hampson said. We don't know if it's intentional or unintentional," said Mulcahey-Hampson.ĭrivers operating a vehicle with a suspended license are subject to arrest, and if they're caught operating an unregistered vehicle their vehicle could be impounded, she said. The reason for the change in law is simple: "We didn't want people to end up facing possible arrest or impoundment of their vehicle for a toll violation. Instead of facing suspension of their driver's license and vehicle registration, targeted drivers will be blocked when they go to renew their registration. 1, 2009, a new law takes effect that lessens the consequences for drivers who fail to respond to, or act on, violation notices. "They're not going through suspension mode."īy Jan. "We're just not putting them through" the system, said Kathleen Mulcahey-Hampson, the Department of Transportation's senior hearing examiner. DOVER - At least 1,700 New Hampshire drivers hit with E-ZPass violations haven't had to worry about losing their driving privileges since late May, when the state decided to freeze punitive action in anticipation of a new law. They have taken the best items from the mobile app and moved them into the desktop app. This was shot down by several people in the program because Office was a paid system and the Windows Mail client was just a basic free app.Anyway…Fast forward to today and Outlook for Mac IMO is the best example of what Microsoft should have done for Windows. I made a suggestion at the time that there should only be ONE version of Outlook and it should just be a lightweight application that would then "turn on features" based on what accounts are added. Log in to Replyīack when Office 2013 launched I was part of the TAP program for that launch. So like wbhite, I hope that they'll keep Outlook on the Desktop as an option like they have with OneNote. Over the years I've always requested this same option in Windows without success. Being left-handed and using OneNote in Tablet mode a lot this has always been one of my most used features. One of the biggest ones for me was the inability to move the scroll bars to the left side. I've been a OneNote user since it was first released and tried my best to use the UWP version but there were just too many features missing. Like others have mentioned I hope it doesn't turn into something like the UWP version of OneNote. Yes it has its quirks but it also has a lot of features I don't want to lose. I'm retired now but still use it every day with my Microsoft 365 subscription. I "grew up" with Outlook on the desktop during my career and still prefer it over all the other implementations. In reply to wbhite:I agree with this as well. The bad news? It appears that Microsoft’s solution for Windows isn’t a new application, which is desperately needed, but rather what it calls Outlook on the web Powered Experiences (OPX), which are literally web-based interfaces and functionality embedded in the existing Outlook client.Īnyone interested in testing the new Outlook(s) early are urged to join the Office Insider Program, where new features are rolled out first in pre-release form. Outlook on the web and already moved to React and now share a common UI and infrastructure that is perform much better than their predecessors and do so using less RAM. There’s also a shared architecture for sync, called Microsoft Sync Technology, and the firm will be using web technologies like React for UI performance and sharing features across the Outlook family, he points out. And one thing that is central to the evolution of Outlook is how we’re building toward a common architecture.” “The different Outlooks were all built at different times and on different tech stacks. “We’re bringing all our Outlooks together,” Microsoft’s JJ Cadiz said in his The Evolution of Outlook session. Well, maybe I’ll be able to soon, or at least a reasonable facsimile: Thanks to Tony Redmond, who covered this topic first on Petri and tipped me off to the relevant Ignite 2020 sessions- here and here-I now that Microsoft, finally, is going to try and fix its Outlook problem. I would love to use Outlook Mobile on Windows 10. But it became particularly acute when Microsoft purchased Accompli and turned its mobile app into Outlook Mobile, which is arguably the single best Outlook experience today. I’ve been complaining about this problem for many years, and about the irony of Microsoft’s premier Outlook client, Outlook for Windows, being the worst of the lot, with a bloated user interface and horrible performance. The initiative is called One Outlook, and it is long overdue. Microsoft is finally taking steps to use a common architecture and user experiences across all Outlook clients on desktop, web, and mobile. It should be either remembered or stored somewhere else (e.g. But the *master password is not stored in the database. KeePass password stealer from the link above: That's the reason KeePass automatically locks your database when you haven't used it for xx minutes. Regarding the guy from above who has lost his database: who told you that you shouldn't make a backup of that as well? What if a cryptolocker hit you? Exactly, it would be still a problem, though not caused by KeePass directly. Honestly, I doubt most people, including you and me, will bother.Īs you can see I'm recommending KeePass. https //MiniKeePass/MiniKeePass You can also compile the desktop version yourself. If you're worried about the mobile app not being as reliable (backdoors etc.) as the desktop app: compile it yourself from sources. Would not happen to an open-source software. For example, there was another incident with a proprietary file "encrypter" for Android/iOS which used the simplest possible "encryption" on earth: XORing of data that is as easy to crack a monkey could do that. If you are concerned about privacy and looking for a bullet-proof solution then the only way to go is open-source software. MW99, you worry about your encrypted database syncing via cloud, but at the same time you are taking a proprietary software (1Password) in consideration. Which is fine with me since KeePassDroid support for 2.0 database files is still experimental, and I've been consequently sticking with 1.1. For the moment, at least, the old clunky KeePass 1.1 remains "secure." Read here: https //2015/11/password-manager-hacked.htmlįWIW, this only works against KeePass 2.0, a fact that was omitted from the article but evident from the source code on GitHub. I really wouldn't use KeePass at the minute.Ī researcher has released a free tool that can steal your passwords. Check it out at They also build and operate digital wallet services and other secure transaction software solutions. They offer a free version as well as one that has a cloud storage option for keeping back-ups. It also has mobile versions that you can use on iOS and Androids as well. I did find an alternative that works really well and I have been using now for about a year (The KeePass issue happened Summer of 2014).Ĭheck out Dashlane. I tried KeePass and had an issue with the file corrupting itself and losing nearly 200 passwords on me. Security and long term use are my main concern. Should I go with KeePass with it's open-sourceness and ability to use it on a thumb drive? Or should I go with 1Password and enjoy a better, official mobile app and browser extension? So, I'm trying to decide between 1Password and KeePass and can't make up my mind. I may just be being paranoid here, but I don't want to take any chances. I'm also concerned that they might shut down one day, or a disgruntled employee might decide to insert something malicious into the software, etc. I'd love to use 1Password, but I'm just not sure how secure it really is. In short, I trust KeePass itself, but I'm not sure if I can trust the third-party developers of the mobile app and browser extension. (1Password has local WiFi sync) There is also KeeFox for Firefox integration, but I'm not sure if I trust that either. Also, syncing between my PC and the app would be a pain. There is MiniKeePass on the iOS App Store, but I'm not sure if I trust it not to make off with my data. The only things really keeping me from using KeePass are the lack of an official mobile app and good browser integration. However, KeePass seems more secure being as it's open source and there is a portable version which can be put onto an encrypted thumb drive. 1Password can be set to store everything locally, has a great mobile app and good browser integration. 1Password, KeePass, and Dashlane all have a mobile app, but Dashlane sends the file to the app via their web servers, so I crossed out Dashlane. It needs to have a mobile iOS application as well. I do NOT want my database file (even if it is encrypted) being stored in the cloud, so I crossed out LastPass. I did some research on the programs out there and narrowed my options down to these four: 1Password, KeePass, Dashlane, and LastPass. I heard about password managers awhile back and have been thinking about getting one. |
